Museums in the partner countries (Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary) have been invited to submit proposals to the MAP for ID partner in those countries, to be selected as pilot projects. All pilot projects are documented in the Handbook.
The pilot projects can further research and experimentation in an area of their choice, including :
- language learning: with museums offering themselves to immigrants as places for learning the language, as well as the culture of the hosting country;
- interpretation: focussing on the interpretation and use of museum collections as bearers of diverse meanings and significance and involving different groups and communities to contribute to the interpretative process, as well as to the display and exhibition of artefacts;
- pluralistic approaches: with museums acknowledging that they very often represent the view-point of the dominant culture and making an effort to introduce practices that involve other perspectives and viewpoints.
- story telling: through the collection of life stories as intangible heritage and the facilitation of an intercultural dialogue between different audiences, as well as an inter-generational dialogue,
- development of staff intercultural competences and skills: by recognising that intercultural dialogue ultimately relies on the abilities and skills of people and that an effort must be made to provide museum staff with intercultural competences and communication skills, including also the ability to establish links with other subjects and develop effective partnerships.
MAP for ID and the Pilot Projects refer to the following criteria which characterise good practice:
- intercultural dialogue as an interactive, bi-directional and dialogical process
- focus on methodology and on the acquisition of changes in attitudes and behaviour
- long-term work and commitment with audiences
- build the outcomes of intercultural activities into the institutional fabric of the museum
